Government Health Initiative: A New Hemodialysis Centre for the Adamawa Region – Ngaoundere
How a new 10-post centre ended 450-kilometre journeys for kidney patients in Ngaoundéré.

The Challenge
Hôpital Régional de Ngaoundéré sits in the city of Ngaoundéré, the capital of the Adamawa Region and an important communications hub linking the south of Cameroon with the north of the country. Yet for one critical service, the region was without an answer.
For years, patients in the Adamawa Region diagnosed with chronic kidney disease faced an impossible choice. Hemodialysis, the extracorporeal blood-purification treatment they depend on to stay alive, was not available locally. To receive it, patients had to travel on average 450 kilometres to dialysis centres in Garoua or Maroua, or relocate with their families to far-off regions such as Yaoundé and Douala. For a treatment that must be repeated several times a week, indefinitely, that distance was not an inconvenience. It was a barrier between patients and survival.
In 2022, the Ministry of Public Health decided to put an end to this suffering, setting a clear goal: to put in place an ultra-modern dialysis system of 10 treatment posts, delivering high-quality care with the best possible patient outcomes, in Ngaoundéré itself.

The Solution
The solution was a new, purpose-built hemodialysis centre, designed from the ground up to meet the Ministry’s vision for the region. Rather than a partial upgrade, this was a complete dialysis centre development: a modern facility, modern equipment and the services to keep it running.
Through contract procedures, a consortium was retained for this sensitive government project: Gima-Bambot MedTech Ltd. and Technologie Médicale du Cameroun Sarl. Gima-Bambot’s role was to implement the Ministry’s vision by supplying and installing an ultra-modern dialysis system, backed by efficient services. Technologie Médicale du Cameroun Sarl was responsible for the civil engineering works of the building.
By combining a new facility, a modern 10-post dialysis system and reliable supporting services, the project was built not just to open, but to deliver dependable renal care infrastructure for the Adamawa Region over the long term.
The Implementation
Delivered as a coordinated project deployment, the centre moved from a government decision to a working facility in a tightly managed sequence:
- Government tender and consortium. Following contract procedures, Gima-Bambot and Technologie Médicale du Cameroun Sarl were selected to deliver the project together.
- Civil engineering works. Technologie Médicale du Cameroun Sarl carried out the construction works for the new centre.
- Dialysis system supply and installation. Gima-Bambot supplied and installed an ultra-modern dialysis system of 10 treatment posts, with the supporting water treatment and technical environment a dialysis centre requires.
- Services and handover. Gima-Bambot provided the efficient services needed to bring the centre into reliable operation.
Timeline: the Ministry’s objectives were achieved in just three months.
The Results
In three months, the Ministry of Public Health’s objectives were achieved, and the Adamawa Region now has its own dialysis centre:
- A new hemodialysis centre with 10 treatment posts, where there had been none.
- An end to ~450 km journeys, with dialysis now available locally in Ngaoundéré.
- High-quality care delivered locally, in line with the Ministry’s goal of the best possible patient outcomes.
- A continuous return of patients, a clear signal that the centre is trusted and used.

The Impact
The deepest impact is measured in journeys no longer taken and families no longer uprooted. For patients living with chronic kidney disease in the Adamawa Region, the new centre means life-sustaining treatment close to home, without the exhausting, costly and repeated travel to Garoua, Maroua, Yaoundé or Douala. Many patients who once had to relocate can now remain with their families while receiving the care they need.
For the region’s health system, the centre strengthens Ngaoundéré’s role as a medical hub for northern Cameroon and demonstrates what a focused public-sector investment in renal care infrastructure can achieve. The continuous return of patients shows that access, once created, is quickly and gratefully used.
By turning a government’s vision into a working dialysis centre in just three months, this project illustrates how the right delivery partnership can extend essential care to underserved regions, and offers a replicable model for expanding dialysis access across Cameroon and the wider CEMAC sub-region.
